Kwara Anglican Bishop laments killings, urges FG to act on insecurity, economy

Ilorin — The Bishop of the Diocese of Kwara, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Rt. Rev. Sunday Timothy Adewole, has called on the Federal Government to take urgent and impartial steps to address Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and economic challenges.

Speaking at the 1st Session of the 18th Synod of the Diocese held at Christ the King Anglican Church, Geri-Alimi, Ilorin, the cleric expressed concern over the spate of violence in parts of Kwara State and across the country, urging government to strengthen efforts to protect lives and property.

He referenced recent incidents of violence in communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, describing them as a reflection of the fragile security situation and a threat to peaceful coexistence.

“We urge the Federal Government to uphold its responsibility of safeguarding lives, promoting justice and ensuring the well-being of all citizens,” Adewole said.

The bishop also condemned attacks on places of worship and noted the impact of kidnappings on residents, traditional rulers and workers, adding that insecurity has disrupted livelihoods and placed financial strain on families.

On the economy, Adewole called for policies aimed at stabilising the naira, reducing inflation and creating sustainable jobs, particularly for young people.

He stressed the need to address corruption through transparency and accountability, while urging authorities to ensure that relief programmes reach vulnerable citizens.

The cleric further called for stronger institutions, adherence to the rule of law and credible electoral processes to rebuild public confidence.

Adewole also urged national leaders to promote unity, religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence across ethnic and regional lines.

While acknowledging efforts by the Kwara State Government in areas such as infrastructure, education, agriculture and social welfare, he noted that challenges remain in rural development, healthcare, youth employment and access to basic amenities.

He encouraged Christians to participate actively in politics and called on Nigerians to adopt values that would promote national development.

Adewole concluded by urging leaders at all levels to govern with humility, integrity and a strong sense of responsibility to the people.
