MDCN advises member on best practices

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, has warned Medical Doctors that practising without a full registration certificate is criminal, stating that such doctors will face the Council’s disciplinary actions.

The Registrar, MDCN, Prof. Fatima Kyari, handed down this warning at Gregory University, Uturu on Friday, on the occasion of the Extended Induction/Oath Taking ceremony of 35 medical inductees.

 He said, “You may wonder, you may say, I know some people who don’t have a full registration certificate but they are still practising; that is criminal because when this PR of your registration certificate expires, and you have not gotten the full (registration), that PR, if you don’t annotate, is criminal”.

Kyari, represented by Head of Department, Medical Registration, Dr. Tijjani Mandaka added, “Please, get your certificate as soon as you finish your horsemanship. The general public, all the regulated agencies are watching what you are doing.

Therefore, any report of infamous conduct against a doctor in professional regard, will be thoroughly investigated by the council.

“However, if there is no case established against you as a doctor, that doctor will be discharged and acquitted. The tribunal has the status of high court and can work under a range of sanctions. You can be admonished, you can be suspended and your name will be completely erased from the register.

“That means you won’t practice again. You will not practice in the world because your name will be sent to all the councils in the world, and in the countries where they use ministry of their health as their regulatory bodies or regulatory agencies, your name will be sent there. So please, know what you are doing”.

He further reminded them that medical profession is one of the most highly regulated professions in the world, adding, “right from your education, registration and practice, whatever you do, people are watching you.

The practice of medicine, she said, is a calling that requires complete dedication and the duty of care towards patient is paramount and assured that the council will protect and stand up for them, while urging them to uphold their training  with utmost integrity.

Earlier, the founder of the university, Prof. Gregory Ibe told the inductees, “Remember that behind every diagnosis is a human being who trusts you with their life. Let your practice be guided not only by science only, but by humanity.
