NTDA DG unveils smart tourism hub

The Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority, Ola Awakan, has unveiled plans to establish a smart tourism hub in his alma mater, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.

Awakan, who was accompanied by his wife, Omolola, was received by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Ayodeji Agboola, and members of the management team, according to a statement shared with Sunday PidomNigeria.

During the visit, the NTDA boss toured some of the institution’s facilities, including its upgraded Information and Communication Technology Centre, describing it as one of the largest in the country.

He also visited the Department of Performing Arts, where students staged an excerpt from his play, Echoes of the Drums, in his honour.

Speaking during the visit, Awakan said the smart tourism hub would provide virtual access to tourism destinations across the country while serving as a platform for learning, innovation and revenue generation.

He noted that the initiative formed part of efforts to reposition tourism as a key driver of Nigeria’s economic diversification.

“As you know, the President has emphasised diversification as the way forward for the economy. Tourism remains one of the most viable alternatives to oil, and many countries have transformed their economies through it,” he said.

Awakan added that the authority would partner with the university and other institutions to develop tourism-focused curricula that would enhance job creation and sectoral growth.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to giving back to the university.

“We will continue to collaborate with Olabisi Onabanjo University beyond the Smart Tourism Hub. This is about contributing to an institution that has shaped my journey,” he said.

In his remarks, the vice-chancellor described Awakan as a worthy ambassador of the institution and commended his contributions to national development.

Agboola said initiatives such as the smart tourism hub would expose students to new opportunities and prepare them for life after graduation.

“It is a great privilege to welcome the Director-General back to campus. We are proud of his achievements and what he represents,” he said.

The Department of Mass Communication of the university also conferred the Great Ambassador Award on Awakan in recognition of his professional accomplishments and contributions to the institution.

The visit highlighted the role of alumni engagement in promoting institutional development and advancing Nigeria’s tourism sector.
