Police officer arrested, moved to force headquarters for killing suspect in Delta

Usman Nuhu, an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) has been arrested and transferred to Abuja for disciplinary action after allegedly killing a 28-year-old suspect in Effurun in Delta state.

This newspaper reports that on Tuesday, a trending video on social media showed the shooting of the suspect, who had been restrained by a police officer attached to the Delta police command.

Confirming the development, Bright Edafe, police spokesperson said the officer had been taken into custody and moved to the Force Headquarters for further investigation and disciplinary proceedings.

Anthony Placid, the force public relations officer explained that the suspect was initially apprehended by members of a transport union at Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele expressway.

He said the victim was allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.

“While efforts were being made to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader… discharged his firearm in clear violation of extant regulations, resulting in the death of the suspect,” Placid stated.

He added that the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force had ordered the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to Abuja, where they would face the Force Disciplinary Committee and possible prosecution.

“The Inspector-General of Police extends his condolences to the family of the deceased and assures them that justice will be served in accordance with the law,” he said.

The police reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial killings and abuse of authority, urging members of the public to remain calm as investigations continue.
