"We would fight until our last breath." Hezbollah Leader urges Lebanon to cancel direct talks with Israel

 Naim QassemHezbollahs leader, Naim Qassem, issued a televised address on Monday calling for the Lebanese government to withdraw from a planned meeting with Israeli officials in Washington.  In his address, Qassem reiterated the groups staunch rejection of direct negotiations with what he termed the “usurping Israeli entity,” urging Lebanese authorities to take a “heroic stance” by canceling the Tuesday session. The scheduled meeting involves the Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to the United States, who are intended to discuss the possibility of formal, direct negotiations between the two nations. This diplomatic effort comes amidst a devastating conflict that has killed more than 2,000 people in Lebanon and displaced over a million since hostilities began on March 2. The two countries remain fundamentally divided on the path forward. Lebanese authorities have prioritized securing an immediate ceasefire to halt the ongoing Israel-Hezbollah war. Conversely, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dism issed the prospect of a simple truce, stating that Israel’s focus is on the total dismantling of Hezbollahs arsenal and the establishment of a lasting, formal peace treaty between the two countries, which have technically remained in a state of war for decades. Qassem dismissed the upcoming Washington talks as “futile” and stressed that any such engagement would require broad national consensus within Lebanon.
