Sanusi rejects EPL move

Zaidu Sanusi has turned down an opportunity to move to the Premier League, opting instead to continue his career with FC Porto, according to manager Francesco Farioli, PidomNigeria Sports Extra reports.

The Porto coach disclosed that the Nigeria international had attracted interest from England during the January transfer window but chose to remain at the club, underlining his commitment despite limited game time earlier in the season.

Farioli explained that Sanusi had been part of the club’s long-term plans and had recently delivered a string of strong performances, while also noting the need to manage competition within the squad. He highlighted the player’s professionalism and positive attitude throughout a challenging period.

“Zaidu is part of our management plan. He had three very good games, we want to reintegrate Francisco Moura, and he played well against Sporting. At the Luz, he came on from the bench,” Farioli said in his pre-match conference.

“As for Zaidu, I am happy, especially because he had the chance to leave for the Premier League during the winter transfer window. We spoke, in the first half of the season he did not have many minutes, but I have always been satisfied with his attitude. Zaidu’s response was clear: he said he would be happy to continue at FC Porto.”

The manager further emphasised that the defender’s decision reflected his mentality and dedication, pointing to his steady progress and importance within the squad.

“The opportunity came and he is progressing. It says a lot about Zaidu’s mentality. He is an example of commitment and is loved by the fans.”

Sanusi’s decision comes at a significant stage of his career, having recently made his 150th appearance for Porto in a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest, a milestone that places him among a select group of Nigerian players to establish a lasting legacy at a European club.

The left-back has endured setbacks, including a lengthy spell out with a serious knee injury, but has since regained his place in the team, offering pace and defensive stability on the flank.

He remains a key figure in Porto’s recent success, notably scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Benfica that secured the 2021/22 Primeira Liga title.

His honours at the club also include the Taça de Portugal and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, further cementing his contribution since arriving in Portugal.

By rejecting a move away, Sanusi has reaffirmed his commitment to Porto as he continues to play a central role in the club’s ambitions.
