Tinubu Charges NRS To Earn Public Confidence Through Fairness And Transparency

At the opening of the Nigeria Revenue Service’s new headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu encouraged the agency to uphold justice, embody trust, and show that the government can be responsible and responsive in its operations. 

Speaking during his keynote address at the ceremony held at the NRS headquarters in Abuja, the President said the Service must earn the confidence of Nigerians at home and respect abroad through transparent and equitable revenue administration.

Tinubu stated, “You must embody trust, ensure fairness, and demonstrate that government can be accountable, responsive, and earn confidence at home and respect abroad.”  The Nigeria Revenue Service, formerly known as the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), was established following the passage of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 as part of the Tinubu administration’s broader fiscal policy and tax reform agenda.

The reforms, which sparked intense debate in the National Assembly before their passage, expanded the agency’s mandate beyond tax collection to encompass the coordination of non-tax revenue, service delivery, governance architecture, and compliance.

Zacch Adedeji, the head of NRS, claims that the new headquarters — a modern three-tower complex designed to accommodate over 3,000 personnel — is part of the operational infrastructure required to modernise fiscal administration in Nigeria.

The agency operates with over 18,000 personnel globally and is responsible for revenue legislation and implementation.

The inauguration featured goodwill messages from Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, who was represented by the Minister of State, Taiwo Oyedele, as well as the Managing Director of CCECC Nigeria, Guan Shuai.

A documentary called “The Journey to NRS” was also screened at the event, which chronicled the transformation from the old revenue agency structure to the new institution.

The welcome speech was given by NRS Executive Chairman Zacch Adedeji, who characterized the commissioning as a turning point in continuous efforts to improve service delivery, broaden the tax base, and fortify Nigeria’s revenue administration.
