Youth Coalition stages peaceful protest in Sokoto, calls for electoral reforms

Hundreds of youths under the umbrella of a coalition of political parties on Tuesday staged a peaceful demonstration at the Sokoto office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), calling for reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system.

The protesters, drawn from various political groups and civil society platforms, converged on the commission’s office in the Sokoto metropolis, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs as they advocated improvements in electoral processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The demonstration, which remained orderly, focused on promoting transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the conduct of elections.

Addressing the gathering, a member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly representing Sokoto North I Constituency, Yarima, said the protest was aimed at encouraging the continued strengthening of democratic institutions.

He noted the importance of credible electoral processes in sustaining democratic governance and urged relevant authorities to ensure that citizens maintain trust in the system.

Also speaking, a former Commissioner for Information in Sokoto State, Akibu Dalhatu, described the protest as a civic initiative designed to encourage national dialogue on electoral development.

Dalhatu emphasized the need for collaboration among stakeholders to promote inclusive participation and strengthen democratic practices.

Participants carried banners with inscriptions such as “Protect Nigeria’s Democracy,” “INEC Must Remain Neutral,” and “No to One-Party State,” as they marched under the supervision of security personnel.

Leaders of the coalition said the demonstration forms part of ongoing advocacy efforts to mobilise citizens and stakeholders toward enhancing democratic institutions and processes.

They expressed optimism that continued engagement would contribute to improvements in the electoral system ahead of the next general elections.

Organisers repeatedly urged participants to remain peaceful and law-abiding throughout the exercise.

The protest reflects broader conversations on electoral reforms and the importance of sustaining democratic values as Nigeria prepares for another electoral cycle.
