Ex-Delta Speaker Ochei resigns from APC

By Egufe Yafugborhi & Ochuko Akuopha
ASABA — Former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
A resignation letter that has since gone viral on social media indicates that Ochei quit the party nearly three weeks before former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, also announced his exit from the party.
The letter, addressed to the APC Chairman, Ward 4, Onicha-Olona, and dated May 8, 2026, was shared on Ochei’s Facebook page hours after it reportedly became public.
In the letter, the former Speaker said his decision followed deep reflection and consultations.
“After deep reflections and wide consultations, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to formally resign my membership of the APC and move on to continue my political journey elsewhere,” he wrote.
Ochei said he joined the APC in 2016 with strong belief in its vision, adding that he committed himself over the years to building and strengthening the party.
According to him, he and other party faithful worked to expand the party’s reach, deepen its structures and mobilise support across communities.
“Together with many committed party faithfuls, we expanded the party’s reach, deepened its structures, mobilised support across communities, and worked tirelessly to give the party relevance and visibility within our political environment,” he stated.
He added that he was proud of the contributions made during his time in the party, including efforts to promote youth and women participation and strengthen democratic engagement.
Ochei, however, said his decision to leave was informed by the need for growth and evolving political convictions.
“Leadership must continually evolve to reflect inclusion, mutual respect, fairness, and the aspirations of the people,” he said.
He stressed that the decision was not driven by bitterness or resentment but by a desire to pursue a new political direction.
Ochei urged his supporters and associates to remain peaceful, focused and committed to democratic values as he embarks on a new political journey.
