Global religious coalition expands peace campaign to Nigeria

A global alliance of religious leaders under the World Peace Movement has expanded its international peace campaign to Africa, identifying Nigeria as a strategic focal point in its renewed push for unity and peaceful coexistence.

The initiative is being spearheaded by Sheikh Ahmad Dabbagh, founder and custodian of the coalition, who is currently touring parts of the continent to promote dialogue, tolerance and collective responsibility among nations.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Sheikh Dabbagh called on leaders and citizens alike to demonstrate stronger commitment to building and sustaining a culture of peace.

The campaign comes amid rising tensions, protracted conflicts and social instability in several parts of the world. In response, the coalition said its mission is to reposition peace not as a distant ideal, but as a practical and indispensable foundation for sustainable development and societal progress.

Addressing journalists, Sheikh Dabbagh explained that the outreach, themed “Unveiling the Power of Peace,” is part of a broader global effort aimed at engaging communities, policymakers and institutions on the critical role of harmony in driving national and international advancement.

According to him, the movement seeks to bridge societal divides through interfaith collaboration, ethical leadership and shared values across sectors.

Describing Nigeria as a pivotal nation in Africa, the cleric cited the country’s large population, cultural diversity and geopolitical significance as key reasons for choosing it as a major focus of the campaign.

He noted that achieving lasting peace in Nigeria could create a ripple effect across the continent and inspire similar efforts in regions facing insecurity and instability.

“The message we are bringing is both timely and necessary. Peace is not optional; it is the bedrock of development and prosperity,” he said.

Sheikh Dabbagh further described the initiative as offering what he termed a “prophetic roadmap” to societal advancement, rooted in moral values, mutual respect and collective responsibility.

As part of its strategy, the coalition said it would utilise both traditional and digital media platforms to amplify its message and reach broader audiences.

The campaign targets government officials, religious institutions, civil society organisations and members of the public through activities such as town hall meetings, interfaith dialogues and youth outreach programmes.

Observers say the initiative aligns with growing global calls for non-violent approaches to conflict resolution, particularly in regions grappling with insecurity and socio-political tensions.

By promoting conversations around tolerance, dialogue and coexistence, the movement hopes to contribute to long-term stability and inclusive growth.

Sheikh Dabbagh urged leaders at all levels to prioritise peacebuilding, stressing that sustainable development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of division and unrest.

He also called on citizens to embrace dialogue and mutual understanding as everyday tools for resolving differences and strengthening national unity.

The Africa tour is expected to continue in other key countries in the coming weeks.

In Nigeria, the campaign will conclude on Sunday, May 3, with a conference at the National Mosque Conference Hall in Abuja. The event, themed “Rebuilding the Ummah: The Prophetic Roadmap to True Success,” is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m., with Muslims encouraged to attend.
