Iheanacho rules cup competitions with goals, trophies

Nigeria forward Kelechi Iheanacho has grown into one of football’s knockout specialists, enjoying greater success in cup competitions than in league campaigns, PidomNigeria Sports Extra reports.

At almost every club Iheanacho has played for, coaches have often handed him more opportunities in cup competitions than in league matches, and the Nigerian has mastered the art of making the most of those chances.

His latest success came with Celtic, where he scored in the club’s Scottish Cup final, as they secured another domestic title to cap an impressive season. The triumph added to Celtic’s remarkable history in the competition and completed another domestic double for the Scottish giants.

Iheanacho arrived at Celtic last summer as a free agent from Sevilla FC but endured an injury-hit campaign.

Amid his struggles to cement a regular place in league matches, he remained an occasional figure in their cup games and made his mark with three goals in four appearances across the Scottish Cup and the League Cup, featuring twice in each competition.

From England to Scotland, the Nigerian striker has built a reputation as a cup specialist, producing goals and decisive performances whenever knockout football comes around.

Before arriving at Celtic, he also made two appearances for Sevilla in the Copa del Rey, scoring three goals.

In England, where he spent seven years with Leicester City, Iheanacho was instrumental in their FA Cup triumph in the 2020/21 season and the Community Shield success in 2021. He had previously won the League Cup with Manchester City F.C. in the 2015/16 season.

The forward’s most memorable cup exploits came during his time at Leicester City, where he became one of the club’s most dependable performers in the FA Cup. He scored four goals in six games during their successful 2020/21 campaign.

One of the defining moments of that run came against Manchester United in the quarter-finals, when Iheanacho scored twice in Leicester’s 3-1 victory. The performance reinforced his reputation as a striker who thrives under pressure, especially in knockout football where moments often define entire seasons.

With his latest success in Scotland, Iheanacho now boasts four major domestic cup titles in his career. Beyond the trophies, he has registered 36 goals and eight assists in 58 cup appearances, underlining his remarkable efficiency in knockout competitions.

Interestingly, his cup productivity has consistently outperformed his league returns. Across his 11-year professional career, Iheanacho has recorded 57 goals and 34 assists in 262 league appearances.

His dominance in the FA Cup also saw him become the competition’s highest-scoring African player in 2023, overtaking former Didier Drogba and Yakubu Aiyegbeni marksmen. He now has 18 goals in the competition.
