Nigerian newspapers review: [2027] Court voids INEC’s timelines on party primaries, nomination of candidates

In today’s Nigerian newspapers review programme, Today in the News, Vanguard leads with political parties being relieved after a Federal High Court in Abuja invalidated the timelines that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, issued for the conduct of primaries and nomination of candidates.

Another headline states that about 5.1 million consumers, representing about 41 per cent of Nigeria’s 12.31 million active electricity customers, were without prepaid meters as of February 2026, according to data released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Vanguard also reports that the Commissioner for Works, Rural Roads and Public Information in Delta State, Charles Aniagwu, said on Thursday that Senator Ned Nwoko lost the All Progressives Congress, APC, primary election to former Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, because of his alleged unpopularity within the district.

Moving to the next paper, The Guardian leads with the All Progressives Congress (APC) consolidating its position ahead of the 2027 governorship elections as incumbent governors secured affirmation tickets in several states, while loyalists and preferred successors of influential party figures emerged as candidates in others.

The Punch’s top headline states that the inability of the APC’s leadership to secure a consensus arrangement forced the postponement of the party’s governorship primaries in Kwara, Bauchi and the state assembly primaries in two constituencies in Zamfara.

Lastly, The Nation leads with Senator Sharafadeen Alli’s defeat of the immediate past Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, which was one of the highlights of Thursday’s governorship primaries of the APC.
