Obi meets Kwankwaso after securing NDC presidential primary clearance

Presidential aspirant in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, on Tuesday night, visited former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso in Abuja.

The meeting between the two leaders of the NDC came shortly after Obi was cleared by the party’s screening committee to participate in its presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso disclosed the visit in a post shared on his X account on Wednesday, revealing that Obi visited him at his Maitama residence in Abuja.

The former Kano governor described Obi as “my brother” while expressing confidence in the future of the party.

“Last night, I received a courtesy visit from my brother, His Excellency Peter Obi, shortly after his successful screening as the presidential aspirant of our party, the NDC. The future is bright and full of promise,” Kwankwaso wrote.

The meeting followed the recent defection of both Obi and Kwankwaso to the NDC in early May 2026 after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Both politicians contested the 2023 presidential election on separate political platforms.

Their movement to the NDC has triggered speculation that they could team up on a presidential ticket.

Obi was on Tuesday cleared unopposed by the NDC screening committee after reportedly emerging as the sole aspirant to purchase the party’s presidential nomination form.
