Police deny political motive in Ayodele Babatola rape case

The Ekiti State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest and prosecution of Ayodele Babatola, stating that the action was lawful and unrelated to politics.

The clarification follows social media claims that the Command colluded with the Ekiti State Government to arrest and prosecute Babatola over a rape allegation.

According to police spokesperson, SP Abutu Sunday, the case began on May 25, 2026, at about 1:00am, when Bukola Oluwaseun, 30, reported to Oke-Ila Divisional Police Headquarters that Babatola had raped and assaulted her.

The incident allegedly occurred the night before, May 24, 2026, at KIIBAT HOTEL, along Petim Estate, Adebayo Area, Ado-Ekiti. Officers noted visible injuries on the complainant at the time of the report.

Oluwaseun told police she met Babatola on social media three months earlier while he was abroad. After he arrived in Nigeria, they agreed to meet physically at Captain Cook area in Ado-Ekiti.

She said he then drove her to the hotel to talk, but instead raped her without consent. She alleged he assaulted her when she resisted, then left the hotel and blocked all her contact channels.

After receiving the complaint, police invited Babatola for questioning and later transferred the case to the State CID for thorough investigation.

During questioning, Babatola said he became provoked when Oluwaseun requested payment before sex.

He claimed he did not penetrate her but admitted leaving her at the hotel and cutting off contact.

Police said a medical examination conducted on the victim confirmed penetration.

Following the investigation, Babatola was charged to court and is currently remanded at the Correctional Service Centre, Ado-Ekiti.

The Command urged the public to disregard claims of illegal arrest or political motivation, emphasizing that the case stemmed from a formal complaint that was investigated.

SP Abutu Sunday reiterated the Command’s commitment to fairness, justice, professionalism, human rights, and the rule of law.
