Woman, 32, accused of killing her 16-month-old son 'hid body in freezer'
A woman has been accused of killing her own son and hiding the 16-month-old’s body in a freezer. Ochra Manakaja, 32, faces charges of first- and second-degree murder. She has also been indicted on 18 charges of child abuse and one count of abandoning or concealing a dead body.
Coconino County Attorney’s Office confirmed in a statement posted on Friday (May 22) that Zion was found dead at a hotel in Flagstaff, Arizona. County Attorney Ammon Barker said in a statement: “We recognize the profound impact of this case and will continue to pursue this matter with the seriousness and care it deserves.”
Authorities said Ms Manakaja had stayed for weeks at La Quinta Inn and Suites in Flagstaff.
Police found Zion’s body wrapped in a blanket, plastic and tape, according to local news outlet, AZ Family.
The same publication reports Ms Manakaja told police she had thrown Zion in his crib in frustration at his crying and fussing.
Court documents include details from the police, which state the toddler started being sick, looked weak, was pale and was “not acting like himself”.
Zion is reported to have developed a fever on May 1, but his mum didn’t take him to hospital or ask family for help as she was afraid she could get in trouble.
Police said when Ms Manakaja checked on the tot, he had his eyes closed and was not breathing. She reportedly told officers her son had probably choked after being sick in the morning.
Documents are also reported to state that the suspect did not want to leave Zion, but she had to go for a drug test.
She was reportedly on probation at that time for driving under the influence.
Fox 10 Phoenix reports that Ms Manakaja hid Zion’s body in the freezer to hide the smell.
Her two other children, aged seven and nine, were also staying in the hotel room, but it was not clear if they were aware of what had happened to their brother.
In its statement, Coconino County Attorney’s Office said the charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
It added: “Because this is an active prosecution, the Coconino County Attorney’s Office is ethically prohibited from commenting on the evidence or discussing facts beyond those contained in the public charging documents.
“The Coconino County Attorney’s Office extends its condolences to all those affected by this tragic situation.”
