Woman, toddler among victims rescued from well in Kano

A 32-year-old woman and her 18-month-old son were among victims rescued from a well in separate incidents recorded in Kano State on Friday.

The Kano State Fire Service said the incidents occurred in Kumbotso and Warawa Local Government Areas, following distress calls received between 7:06 a.m. and 9:40 a.m.

In the Warawa incident, which involved the woman and her child, firefighters responded to a call from Madarin Taba Village.

On arrival, they found the woman, identified as Maimuna Shitu, and her son, Harisu Muntari, inside a well.

According to the Fire Service, the woman’s father said she had been suffering from mental illness.

“Both victims were rescued unconscious and handed over to the Ward Head, Yusuf Surajo, and the woman’s father, Muhammad Shitu,” the statement said.

In a separate incident at Semegu area by El-Sadeeq Bread in Kumbotso Local Government Area, an unidentified man believed to be about 40 years old was also rescued after falling into a well.

“The victim was rescued unconscious and handed over to the Divisional Crime Officer, Salisu Salihu of the Panshekara Police Division for further investigation,” the agency added.

The Fire Service noted that the causes of both incidents are still under investigation.

Reacting to the development, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents to take preventive measures.

“Residents, especially parents and guardians, should ensure that wells are properly covered to avoid such incidents,” he said.
