A prosecution witness in the trial of former Bureau of National Communications (BNC) Director-General Kwabena Adu-Boahene has told the Accra High Court that GH¢49.1 million was transferred from a BNC account into a private company account allegedly linked to him and his wife.
The witness, Frank Marshall Cromwell of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), said the transfers were done through three cheques signed by Adu-Boahene in 2020 while he was in office.
He told the court that investigations began after EOCO received information in March 2025 about alleged misappropriation of public funds at the BNC.
He said the money was moved from a Fidelity Bank account belonging to the BNC into an account of BNC Communications Bureau Limited at Universal Merchant Bank.
He explained that three cheques valued at GH¢27.1 million, GH¢1 million and GH¢21 million were issued from the BNC account.
The first cheque, dated January 6, 2020, was signed by Adu-Boahene and later deposited into the private company’s account in February 2020.
The witness told the court that although the cheque listed “BNC Operations” as the payee, the deposit was made into “BNC Communications Bureau Limited – Operations”.
He said the same pattern was repeated for the other two cheques issued in March 2020.
Cromwell also told the court that the BNC account belonged to the National Security Council Secretariat and was operated under the name “Director BNC”.
He said investigations showed that BNC Communications Bureau Limited was incorporated in 2018 with Adu-Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, as directors.
He added that Adjei-Boateng was listed as beneficial owner, while Advantage Solutions Limited was the sole shareholder.
The witness said both accused persons initially denied knowledge of the company during questioning but later gave conflicting explanations.
He also told the court that a former finance head at BNC said she only deposited cheques into the account on instructions and did not know the purpose of the transfers.
