At least 20 injured in Germany after crash between school bus and cement mixer

A crash between a school bus and a cement mixer truck has injured at least 20 people on Thursday, it has emerged. Five people were hospitalised following the collision in a German town yesterday, June 11, after the truck driver failed to see the bus stopped.

The 58-year-old was among the injured, with the other four taken to hospital being schoolchildren. Police said he was unable to brake in time and collided with the back of the bus in Hameln, though it’s not yet clear why he could not see it at a stop.

The site of the crash, Federal Highway 83, was completely closed for several hours, and officers estimate the damage to be €30,000 (£25,000).

Hameln is a town on the river Weser in Lower Saxony, and the capital of the district of Hameln-Pyrmont.

In another part of the country, a schoolboy tragically died when two buses collided head-on in a separate incident.

The incident unfolded near Hebertshausen in Upper Bavaria on Wednesday, on State Road 2339 between Ampermoching and Ottershausen.

A public bus collided with a tour bus carrying schoolchildren and teachers from two second-grade classes at Haimhausen Elementary School.

It occurred on a bend in the road where speed limits are 60kmh in one direction, and 50kmh in the other.

Police said all 35 people involved were injured, many of them children. Two children and a teacher are currently in critical condition, fighting for their lives.

Four rescue helicopters were part of the emergency response, as well as 15 ambulances and eight emergency doctors.
