Barau sponsored 42 bills in three years — Aide

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has recorded one of the highest legislative outputs in the 10th National Assembly, sponsoring 42 bills within three years.

The record, covering June 13, 2023, to June 13, 2026, shows consistent legislative activity across governance, economic, and social policy sectors, with five of the bills already passed into law, according to Senate records.

PidomNigeria Online reports that the 10th National Assembly was inaugurated on June 13, 2023, following a proclamation by President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, and is marking its third anniversary on June 13, 2026.

A Friday statement by Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, described the output as a significant legislative achievement.

The statement concluded that the legislative record reflects sustained policy engagement and institutional productivity as the 10th Senate approaches its mid-term milestone.

Data published in The Parliamentarian Magazine, a publication of the Deputy Senate President’s media office, shows Senator Barau—who represents Kano North Senatorial District—maintained steady bill sponsorship across the three-year period, reinforcing his profile as a leading legislative contributor in the upper chamber, the release noted.

It read, “Sponsoring forty-two bills in three years is, without doubt, a colossal legislative feat. Senator Barau, fondly called ‘Maliya’, has always been known as someone who raises the bar to enviable heights in all his endeavours.”

The statement further highlighted his dual responsibilities within the Senate leadership and the ECOWAS Parliament.

“The Deputy Senate President has achieved this alongside the demanding duties of supporting the Senate President in providing leadership for the Senate.

“At the sub-regional legislature, the ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Barau as the First Deputy Speaker has been playing a key role in the leadership of the regional assembly,” he said.

A breakdown of the bills indicates 13 sponsored in 2023, nine in 2024, 17 in 2025, and three in 2026, spanning sectors including governance reform, education, healthcare, energy, digital economy, and constitutional amendments.

Among the five bills already passed are major institutional and development-focused legislations, including the North West Development Commission Bill, the National Identity Management Commission (Repeal & Enactment) Bill, the Agricultural Research Council (Amendment) Bill, the Federal Medical Centre, Gwarzo Establishment Bill, and the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo Establishment Bill.
