Cycling Federation, Lagos cyclists ride for safer roads

Cyclists in Lagos joined the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and road safety officials to advocate safer roads and greater consideration for bicycle users as part of activities marking the 2026 World Bicycle Day.

The cyclists embarked on an awareness ride across major parts of the state, using the event to promote cycling as a safe, affordable and environmentally friendly means of transportation while calling for improved infrastructure for riders.

The rally, organised by the Cycling Federation of Nigeria in partnership with FT Cycle Care and the Federal Road Safety Corps, commenced from the National Stadium, Surulere, and passed through Anthony, Obanikoro, Maryland and Ojodu Berger before ending at the FRSC office in Lagos.

Speaking during the event, a board member of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, Femi Thomas, said the celebration was aimed at encouraging the use of bicycles as an alternative means of transportation and creating awareness among other road users on the rights of cyclists.

“This is part of the edition where we come around to the Federal Road Safety in order to acknowledge and celebrate this day with them and likewise reaching out to different clubs, different communities and different bicycle enthusiasts to come together and unite to do this advocacy ride so we can educate other road users what cycling is all about and how they can accept us and create room for us to ride on the road being safe,” Thomas said.

He added that cycling remained a viable means of transportation and a source of livelihood for many people, stressing the need for greater public acceptance of cyclists on Nigerian roads.

Also speaking, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Kehinde Hamzat, urged cyclists to comply with traffic regulations while calling on governments to provide road infrastructure that accommodates bicycle riders.

“Look at the law establishing the safety of riding a bike, then we talk of the road, they should as well give right and ensure they don’t abuse the use of road. And we admonish the government to try and consider cyclists when they are constructing roads, such that it will accommodate the cyclists,” Hamzat said.

The 2026 World Bicycle Day was celebrated globally under the theme, “Boosting Urban Life with the Bicycle,” highlighting cycling as a practical solution to traffic congestion, pollution and other urban mobility challenges.

Stakeholders at the event noted that increased investment in cycling infrastructure and safety measures would encourage more people to adopt bicycles, improve public health and contribute to sustainable urban development.
