Damaturu Shaken as Police Detain Suspects Over Disturbing Newborn Death Case

Two suspects have been detained by the Yobe State Police Command in connection with the alleged murder and hiding of a newborn girl in the state capital of Damaturu.

The Violent Crime Response Unit reacted to a distress call on June 23, 2026, at around 4:10 p.m., involving the alleged strangulation of a baby and hiding of her remains, according to a statement released by the Command through its Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim.

According to preliminary investigations, a female suspect who had just given birth allegedly strangled the infant and concealed the body in a box that was later left outside a mosque in Damaturu’s Anguwar Boka neighborhood.

According to the Command, “two suspects are currently in custody and assisting with investigations.”

Usman Kanfani Jibrin, Commissioner of Police, called the act “heinous and inhuman,” emphasizing the value of every human life and the need to preserve it.

He issued a warning, threatening to prosecute anybody who commit acts of violence against children or other vulnerable people.

The Command reminded the public that all children are entitled to protection, care, and dignity and have inherent legal rights. There are still investigations.
