Diaspora Igbo plans Washington D.C. rally over insecurity in Nigeria

The World Igbo Congress (WIC) has announced plans to hold a four-day advocacy rally in Washington D.C. to draw global attention to the rising state of insecurity, violent crime, and criminality affecting communities in Nigeria.

In a statement sighted on Wednesday, the organisation said its Vice Chairman, Basil Onwukwe, has been mandated to lead a delegation to the United States capital for the event.

Organized in collaboration with the Save Nigeria advocacy group, led by Stephen Osemweigie, the event aims to mobilize the Nigerian diaspora and actively engage international stakeholders to apply closer scrutiny to Nigeria’s current security framework.

The program will host structured discussions focusing on systemic violence, regional instability, and potential solutions for community safety.

It will also include an awards ceremony recognising members of the U.S. Congress who have contributed to raising awareness of Nigeria’s security situation.

The rally is scheduled to hold from June 20 to June 23, 2026, beginning daily at 10:00 a.m.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Onwukwe said the WIC remains committed to drawing attention to insecurity issues and supporting efforts aimed at improving safety in affected communities.

He also expressed concern about Nigeria’s security framework and called for broader scrutiny of the country’s approach to addressing violent crime.

Onwukwe urged members of the Nigerian diaspora to support advocacy efforts and continue engaging international stakeholders on issues affecting security in Nigeria.

The World Igbo Congress said it hopes the planned Washington event will encourage greater global attention and action toward addressing insecurity in the country.
