A man who was caught allegedly attempting to steal garri from a market stall has been subjected to an unconventional form of community justice, after traders offered him an unusual deal, that is, finishing an enormous basin of soaked garri and a plate of beans on the spot, or receive a physical beating.
Footage of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the shirtless man seated on a mat on a concrete floor, positioned before a large basin of soaked garri that appears to dwarf him in size, with a bowl of beans beside him as an accompaniment.
The clip has been shared widely with the explanation that community members, rather than immediately resorting to mob violence upon catching the alleged thief, decided to offer him the food-based challenge as an alternative consequence, a decision that has been received with considerable amusement online.
The location of the incident was not confirmed at the time of publication, nor was the outcome of the challenge, whether the man succeeded in consuming the contents of the basin and walked free, or faced the stated alternative consequence.
