The Nigeria Democratic Congress has dissociated itself from a list of alleged candidates for elections in Imo, Abia and Anambra states that has been making the rounds on social media, calling it fake and unauthorised.
In a statement released on Friday, the party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu, called on members and the public to disregard the circulating lists, stressing that they did not come from the party’s national headquarters.
The NDC said it had already forwarded the genuine list of candidates set to represent the party in the affected states to the Independent National Electoral Commission, following the procedures laid out in the Electoral Act.
Part of the statement read that members of the public, particularly NDC members in Imo, Abia, Anambra and other affected states, were being urged to disregard the candidate lists currently circulating on social media, as these did not represent the party’s authentic lists.
The statement clarified that the lists in question were fake and had not originated from the party headquarters.
Enekweizu claimed that the fake documents were being spread by “mischief makers” attempting to sow confusion and divert the party’s attention from its work.
He disclosed that the NDC had begun looking into the matter to trace the origin of the bogus lists and establish how the information had been leaked.
He said such circulating lists were being pushed by individuals who did not wish the party well, describing them as desperate attempts to stir ill will and create distractions within the party.
He added that the party was working to investigate the source of these fabrications and leaks.
The party went on to reassure its members of its commitment to maintaining internal unity, as well as its broader goal of offering Nigerians an alternative political platform.
