Nigerian woman sparks debate over how Americans react to pregnancy

A Nigerian woman on X has stirred conversation online after sharing her surprise at how openly some Americans interact with pregnant women.

According to her, Americans often congratulate pregnant women, touch their baby bump, and ask whether they are expecting a boy or a girl.

“As a Nigerian, you’re still in shock and they ask, ‘Is it a boy or a girl?’ Ah, did my village people send you? We don’t do that in Africa o. God abeg,” she wrote.

Her post sparked mixed reactions.

One user agreed, revealing that she freely discusses her baby’s gender and due date during pregnancy conversations, only to notice that some people find it oversharing.

Another pointed out that touching a pregnant woman’s belly without permission is inappropriate regardless of culture.

“US or not, it’s never acceptable to touch anyone without permission except people you’re very close to,” the user wrote.

A third commenter described the difference as a cultural shock, arguing that many Nigerians tend to attach deeper meanings to such questions, while Americans often ask them innocently.
