A 21 year old woman tragically lost her life on Saturday after staff at a bungee jumping facility pushed her from a bridge without fastening her to a safety rope, leading to a 130-foot plunge into the ravine below.

In the wake of her death, a chilling social media post she shared beforehand has come to light. The fatal incident occurred on ‘Skeleton Bridge’ in Limeira, São Paulo, Brazil.

Maria Eduardo Rodrigues de Freitas was led onto the platform by two men before being propelled over the edge. Footage circulating online shows Maria had no rope attached and plummeted 40 metres straight into a canyon.

Witnesses can be heard in the video’s background shouting that she had no safety equipment for her jump.

Across several posts, the woman from the neighbouring community of Jandira revealed the bungee jumping site’s location and showed her identification wristbands in preparation for the experience. Maria was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services, and six people connected to the operation have been detained: five men and one woman.

Just hours before the fatal accident, Maria had excitedly shared news of the planned jump on her social media accounts.

She also photographed the company staff members who would later be responsible for pushing her from the platform unattached, according to The Sun.

In one of her final haunting posts, Maria uploaded an image of the company’s signage, captioning it: “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?” According to Brazil’s Military Police, a witness reported that employees from the firm simply failed to attach the rope before Maria was launched from the platform.

Authorities state that two men absconded from the location directly following the incident and were later discovered in a forested area with assistance from local police.

The video circulating on social media platform X has left viewers appalled, with many voicing fury regarding the lack of safety protocols.

One individual remarked: “It’s not a safety rope. That implies it’s there ‘just to be safe’. This is literally THE ROPE. It’s the entire reason she tried to do this. It is the ONLY requirement of this entire thing. You had one job. One. And failed.”

Another posted: “They literally launched her off a bridge without triple checking if the MOST important part was attached. I call that murder.

“No attachment. No double-check. No ‘wait is the cord actually on her?’ Moment. Just lift, swing, launch and watch her drop,” noted another before adding: “That’s not an ‘accident’. That’s criminal-level negligence. The rope was right there. They walked past it. They handled her. They still threw her.”

Following the tragedy, Limeira City Hall disclosed intentions to take legal action against the Federal Government over what authorities described as negligence relating to Ponte de Esqueleto (Skeleton Bridge). Municipal administrators have claimed that federal authorities are responsible for the inspection, upkeep and access control of the bridge.

Local officials say they had submitted numerous requests for safety enhancements in the area before the incident occurred, yet “no concrete action has been taken”.
