Jonathan not in 2027 presidential race, associates insist

Close associates of former president Goodluck Jonathan have dismissed speculation that he is preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election, insisting there is no indication that he intends to return to the ballot.

The associates said reports linking Jonathan to the race are politically motivated and aimed at creating confusion within the political space.

They added that a formal clarification reaffirming his position is expected to be released soon.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the sources said Jonathan has not engaged in any consultations, mobilisation, or political activities associated with a presidential campaign. According to them, if the former president were interested in running, his actions would already reflect active participation in political processes across the country.

They further argued that a serious presidential aspirant would have publicly declared interest, obtained nomination forms, and undergone party screening, none of which they said Jonathan has done. One of the sources also dismissed claims that the former president had purchased or submitted nomination forms, describing such reports as unfounded.

The associates maintained that Jonathan has not informed his political circle of any intention to contest, adding that recurring reports of his alleged presidential ambition are part of a familiar election-season narrative often used to generate political attention.

However, a contrasting position was presented by a source linked to the Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which insisted that Jonathan remains its candidate for the 2027 election, despite his silence on the matter. The faction argued that his quiet disposition is consistent with his political style and should not be interpreted as withdrawal.

The opposing claims have fueled renewed debate within political circles, as Jonathan’s associates continue to insist that the former president is not in the 2027 presidential race and will, in due course, clarify his position publicly.
