Luxury Estates for Judges Spark Debate Over Judiciary Independence in Abuja

The Tinubu administration has commissioned fully furnished five-bedroom estates equipped with recreation centres and shops in Katampe, Abuja, for judges of the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court, as part of activities marking the administration’s third anniversary on June 17, 2026.

The estates were formally delivered by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

President Bola Tinubu, speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima, described the housing project as a strategic investment in judicial independence and the rule of law, arguing that it would help shield judges from vulnerabilities that could otherwise compromise their decision-making.

However, the initiative has drawn criticism from some quarters, with Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed describing it as a thinly veiled attempt to influence judicial rulings ahead of the 2027 elections.

Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, welcomed the development, noting that it addresses a longstanding accommodation challenge faced by judicial officers.

Wike, for his part, dismissed accusations that the project amounted to a land grab, defending it as a legitimate effort to improve welfare within the judiciary.
