NDC dismisses claims of irregularities, defends party primaries

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected allegations of irregularities and candidate imposition in its recently concluded primaries for presidential, legislative and governorship elections.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Morgan Enekweizu, the party’s national secretary said the claims were based on misunderstanding of its constitution and deliberate attempts to discredit the party.
He said the NDC adopted a consensus-driven approach to promote unity and reduce internal disputes among members.
According to him, the party conducted its presidential primary in Lagos with delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in attendance.
Enekweizu said the process reflected broad consultation and internal democracy, adding that aspirants who disagreed with stakeholder recommendations were allowed to contest through the party’s established procedures.
He maintained that the party secretariat did not impose candidates on any constituency, stressing that all aspirants were given equal opportunity to participate in the process.
The party also said its affirmative action policy encouraged greater participation of women and sought to protect serving lawmakers during the primaries.
Enekweizu disclosed that complaints arising from the exercise had been referred to the party’s appeal panel, while a reconciliation process would soon begin to strengthen unity ahead of future elections.
The NDC, registered in February 2026, said it has since built structures nationwide and held several NEC meetings as it positions itself for the 2027 general elections.
