Osun State is set to distribute nearly 2.9 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets to its residents as part of a malaria control initiative.
The exercise is being coordinated by the state government alongside several health organisations, including the National Malaria Elimination Programme, Catholic Relief Services, and the Society for Family Health, with financial backing from the Global Fund Malaria.
According to the campaign’s Logistics Advisor, Simeon Ibvori, the nets are already being moved from the state warehouse to distribution points across local governments, with a particular focus on rural communities where malaria risk is highest. T
he goal is to ensure that every two people have at least one treated net to sleep under.
This distribution is a routine exercise carried out every three years, and it is meant to replace the nets previously handed out in 2023.
Residents are advised to air the nets in the shade for 24 hours before use, and are strongly reminded that the nets are free and not meant to be sold.
Officials also urged residents to cooperate with health workers during the distribution process.
It was further revealed that since the malaria elimination programme began, over 200 million nets have been distributed nationally, with each net having a lifespan of between one and four years.
