Police clarify that resurfaced group "Sai Malam" have not been designated as terrorists

The Kebbi State Police Command is investigating reports regarding the alleged resurgence of a group known as “Sai Malam” in the Argungu Local Government Area using actionable intelligence.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, on Friday, June 26, the Command confirmed awareness of the reports and stated that verification efforts are underway.
The Command explicitly clarified that the “Sai Malam” group has not been designated as a terrorist organization under any existing proscription order.
According to the statement, individuals previously prosecuted by the police in February 2026 in Zuru were arrested and investigated strictly in connection with criminal activities.
Exhibits recovered from those suspects included suspected counterfeit currencies from various countries—including the Nigerian Naira, United States Dollar, CFA Franc, and Libyan Dinar—as well as suspected ritual or occult materials.
The police emphasized that no firearms were recovered from the suspects during that investigation.
Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining law and order, the Command assured residents that it will continue to take decisive action against all forms of criminal activity in strict accordance with the law.
SP Usman urged members of the public to remain calm and to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing credible information to assist ongoing investigations.
