Rivers State Police Commissioner Olugbenga Adepoju personally intervened during a routine inspection in Port Harcourt on Tuesday after encountering Special Task Force officers blocking a highway, ordering them to clear the road immediately.
The Commissioner cited directives from Inspector-General Olatunji Rilwan Disu banning unauthorised checkpoints, and the confrontation, which was captured on video, drew widespread praise as a demonstration of hands-on leadership in tackling ext0rtion and unprofessional conduct that has long frustrated motorists.
While the development has renewed hope among some residents that enforcement under Adepoju, who assumed command in January 2025, could bring lasting change, others remain sceptical, pointing to persistent complaints of underfunding and revenue pressures as factors that continue to drive such conduct among officers.
