Tragedy in Greece as British tourist, 55, collapses and dies

A British man has collapsed and died in Greece after he and his wife went to hospital when she started to feel unwell. The 55-year-old holidaymaker was enjoying a break with his wife in Kalavryta, in the Peloponnese region of the country.

The man drove his wife to Kalavryta Hospital on Wednesday afternoon June 3 where healthcare professionals swiftly provided first aid to the woman as she lay on a bed. Local media reports suggest, the man was at his wife’s bedside when he collapsed, with doctors and nurses immediately rushing to perform CPR on him.

Despite the valiant efforts of the hospital staff, he was declared dead a few minutes later, according to the Ekathimerini newspaper.

The cause of the man’s death is yet to be established, the daily Athens newspaper reported.

An autopsy will be conducted in the next few days to determine what transpired, while police in Kalavryta have initiated a preliminary investigation into the incident.

Reports indicate that the woman has since been discharged from the hospital following brief treatment for her illness.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.”

The mountain region of Kalavryta is popular for tourists wanting to visit its deep gorges and alipine beauty. The area is also a magnet for skiing enthusiasts.

According to Visit Greece, railway buffs will also enjoy the famous Odontotos, or rock railway, which takes passengers on a tour around Vouraikos Gorge on a route which is considered “one of the most scenic in Greece”. The journey ends at the shores of the Corinthian Gulf.

Last month a 66-year-old British woman died after she was pulled unconscious from the pool by her horrified partner on the Greek island of Zante.

The British couple were on holiday in Greece at the time of the tragic incident. Authorities launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of her death.
