A 51-year-old man has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service following allegations that he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl, with investigations into the case currently ongoing, police have confirmed.
The suspect, whose identity has not been officially released, was taken into custody and is being held as investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged rape of the minor.
The age of the alleged victim places the case firmly within the provisions of Ghana’s criminal laws on defilement, under which sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 16 constitutes a criminal offence regardless of any claimed consent, and is punishable upon conviction by a minimum sentence of five years imprisonment.
The Ghana Police Service had not issued a detailed formal statement on the case, including the location of the alleged incident, the relationship between the suspect and the victim, or the stage of the investigation, at the time of publication.
The identity of the minor involved is protected under Ghanaian law and has not been disclosed.
