Ali Modu Sheriff lacks moral standing to lecture Obi on patriotism — Obidient Movement

The Obidient Movement has criticised former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, saying he lacks the moral standing to question the patriotism of the presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Peter Obi following remarks he made during a television interview.

In a statement issued by its Media and Communications Directorate, the movement accused Sheriff of sidestepping questions on the performance of the administration of President Bola Tinubu during his appearance on Channels Television.

According to the group, rather than addressing concerns over insecurity and the economy, the former governor shifted the discussion to issues surrounding the Nigerian Civil War and Obi.

The movement argued that Sheriff’s comments were an attempt to divert attention from current governance challenges. It maintained that public discourse should focus on issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, and the rising cost of living rather than ethnic or historical debates.

Defending Obi, the group said the presidential candidate of NDC has consistently demonstrated commitment to national unity and inclusive development.

It cited his investment in businesses across regional and religious divides, including support for Umza Rice during his time as chairman of Fidelity Bank, as evidence of his belief in a united Nigeria.

According to the statement, Obi has also outlined plans to harness northern Nigeria’s agricultural potential to boost economic growth and diversify national revenue.

The Obidient Movement further rejected claims questioning Obi’s commitment to Nigeria’s unity, stating that he has consistently advocated dialogue, justice, and inclusion as approaches to resolving insecurity and national grievances.

The group also criticised Sheriff over allegations relating to his past political record, arguing that he was not in a position to question Obi’s patriotism.

The movement urged Nigerians to remain focused on governance, accountability, and solutions to the country’s economic and security challenges rather than political distractions.
