Badejo-Okusanya Emerges Early Frontrunner in NBA Presidential Election

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, has taken an early lead in the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential election.

Preliminary figures released on Saturday indicate that Badejo-Okusanya secured 10,019 votes, representing 45.5% of ballots counted so far. Her closest rival, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe (SAN), polled 6,750 votes (30.9%), while Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro (SAN) followed with 5,061 votes (23.2%). With 23,411 votes already tallied, the contest appears to be tilting in Badejo-Okusanya’s favour, though final results are still awaited.

The early lead comes just a day after NBA President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), publicly dismissed allegations of interference in the national officers’ election. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Osigwe stressed that the Electoral Committee of the NBA operates independently and takes no instructions from him. He denied backing any candidate, describing the allegations as politically motivated and lacking evidence.

His remarks followed weeks of controversy surrounding the July 18 election, with some candidates and stakeholders raising concerns about the integrity of the process, calling for postponement, demanding mandatory National Identification Number verification for voters, and accusing NBA leadership of attempting to influence the outcome.

The association has consistently rejected such claims, maintaining that only the Electoral Committee is constitutionally empowered to conduct the election. Osigwe further noted that allegations of manipulation in past NBA elections have never been substantiated in court, adding that his personal voting preference could not sway the outcome.
