Chevron Secures Key Acreage in Nigeria’s 2025 Licensing Round, Bolstering Upstream Strategy

Star Deep Water Petroleum Limited, a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation, has successfully secured Petroleum Prospecting Licence (PPL) 2010 following its winning bid in Nigeria’s 2025 licensing round. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) announced the successful bidders in Abuja on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, marking a significant development for Chevron’s upstream operations in the country.
This strategic acquisition underscores Chevron’s ongoing commitment to Nigeria, a market long considered integral to its global business portfolio. Kevin McLachlan, Vice President of Exploration at Chevron, highlighted the company’s disciplined approach to identifying and securing high-potential exploration opportunities worldwide. “This award reflects our disciplined approach to adding quality acreage to our portfolio,” McLachlan stated, emphasizing the alignment of this acquisition with Chevron’s global exploration strategy.
Jim Swartz, Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron companies in Nigeria and the Mid-Africa region, expressed appreciation for the NUPRC’s efforts and the collaborative spirit of all stakeholders involved in orchestrating a successful licensing round. “Chevron remains committed to working collaboratively with the Nigerian government and our partners to support the development of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry and contribute to the country’s broader economic growth,” Swartz affirmed. This sentiment signals a continued dedication to fostering mutually beneficial relationships within Nigeria’s energy sector.
The award of PPL 2010 is a testament to Chevron’s robust exploration framework, which integrates advanced technology, stringent portfolio management, and selective entry into promising ventures. This move not only reinforces Chevron’s presence in Nigeria but also complements its broader African exploration initiatives and its global ambition to develop energy resources essential for human progress. For legal professionals, compliance officers, and corporate executives, this development signals continued investment and operational expansion by a major international oil company, necessitating ongoing vigilance regarding regulatory compliance, contractual obligations, and strategic partnership management within Nigeria’s dynamic oil and gas landscape. Investors and business leaders will observe this expansion as a positive indicator of Nigeria’s attractiveness for significant upstream investments.
