Ebonyi: Outrage as Police detain officers over alleged assault

Ebonyi State Police Command has detained some of its officers and launched an investigation following allegations that they assaulted a civilian in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, an incident that reportedly left the victim with a damaged eye.

In a press statement issued on Monday, and signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed that the officers involved in the altercation have been identified and transferred to the Command Headquarters.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, have ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, to commence a thorough investigation.

Ukandu noted that the officers have since been detained and will face appropriate disciplinary procedures depending on the outcome.

“The Command has expressed sympathy to the victim, who is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, and assures the public that the matter will be investigated thoroughly, transparently, and without bias,” the statement read.

The Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for the fundamental rights of all citizens. It also restated its zero-tolerance stance on brutality and all forms of misconduct capable of bringing the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute.

“Any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action in line with established regulations,” the statement added.

The incident has sparked condemnation from residents and civil society groups in Ebonyi, who are calling for swift justice and transparency in the probe.
