Xenophobia: South Africa rejects Nigeria’s compensation demand

The South African government has rejected Nigeria’s request for compensation for citizens who abandoned their businesses and properties after fleeing renewed xenophobic attacks in the country.

Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, South Africa’s minister in the presidency, said the government would not compensate Nigerians who fled the country, insisting that anyone with legally acquired property remained free to sell or recover such assets through established legal channels.

She maintained that houses, vehicles and businesses registered under South African law remain protected by existing property regulations, making government compensation unnecessary.

However, the minister’s comments took a controversial turn when she called on Nigerian authorities to disclose locations allegedly used for drug-related activities by some Nigerians in South Africa, saying such information would assist law enforcement agencies in dismantling criminal networks.

Ntshavheni also dismissed claims relating to structures in informal settlements, arguing that such buildings are illegal and therefore do not qualify for compensation.

Her remarks came days after Nigeria announced plans to compile details of businesses and properties abandoned by citizens forced to flee renewed anti-foreigner violence, with the intention of engaging South African authorities on possible compensation.

Temitope Ajayi, acting Nigerian high commissioner to South Africa, had disclosed that returnees were documenting both movable and immovable assets abandoned during the crisis as part of the government’s intervention.

So far, more than 850 Nigerians have been evacuated from South Africa in four batches, while diplomatic engagements between both countries continue over the safety and welfare of affected citizens.
