The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, raided several illegal mining sites on Wednesday and arrested two suspects.
The operation was carried out jointly by officials from the ministry across Ogun, Oyo, and Osun States, in collaboration with security operatives.
The illegal mining sites were located at Ileki-Ijesa along the Ile-Ife/Ilesa road, where illegal artisanal miners had been operating.
During the raid, the suspects fled the scene as officials dismantled the two main bases and confiscated machines and other equipment used in the illegal operation.
Speaking with reporters at the scene, the Southwest Zonal Mines Officer described the raid as part of ongoing efforts to tackle illegal mining operations and the land degradation they cause.
He explained that the officials were conducting inspection and lawful enforcement activities in the area to enhance compliance with mining laws and regulations, while also working to protect the environment, ensure the safety of residents, and safeguard the nation’s mineral resources.
He disclosed that when the illegal miners spotted the team, they fled into the bush, but officials managed to arrest two suspects and recover boats and other equipment being used at the site. He added that the inspection exercise remains ongoing across the state, aimed at putting an end to illegal mining activities.
Similarly, the Osun State Mines Officer noted that the raid would serve as a warning to illegal miners and their sponsors across the state, urging community and religious leaders to partner with the Federal and state governments in tackling illegal mining activities.
Among the items seized during the operation were two motorcycles, a pumping machine, Lister generators, large hose pipes, cutlasses, washing machines, and a gold-trapping carpet, among other equipment.
