First Lady billed to pay on one-day working visit to Abia

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is scheduled to visit Ekiti State on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, for a high-profile one-day working tour to celebrate the renowned Akwete weaving heritage.

The official announcement was made in a statement signed by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, on Monday,

According to the statement, the First Lady, who is also the National Chairman of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), will be hosted by Governor Alex Otti and his wife, Priscilla.

Kanu disclosed that the highlight of the visit will be a tour of the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society in Akwete, Ukwa East Local Government Area.

The statement read, “During the visit, Senator Tinubu will interact with master weavers and witness first-hand the craftsmanship that has made Akwete textiles globally recognised.

“After the inspection, the First Lady and Governor Otti will proceed to the Akwete Central School Field for a grand civic reception scheduled to commence at 10:00 a.m.

“The reception is aimed at celebrating the historic visit and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Akwete to the nation.

“The event is expected to bring together government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, women and youth groups, stakeholders, and residents.”

Kanu added that the state government had invited residents of Abia State, especially those in Ukwa East Local Government Area and neighbouring communities, to turn out in large numbers to accord the First Lady a warm and memorable welcome.

Akwete cloth, handwoven for centuries in Ukwa East, remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated cultural exports and a major source of livelihood for women in the area.
