Gov Fintiri Swears In Newly Elected Council Chairmen, Issues Strict Directives

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State on Wednesday swore in the 21 newly elected local government chairmen, charging them to deliver good governance at the grassroots and shun corruption.

The chairmen, elected during the June 13 local government elections conducted by the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC), will serve a three-year term.

Politics Nigeria reports that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won all the chairmanship seats in the election.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony in Yola, Fintiri congratulated the 21 chairmen and the 226 elected councillors on their victory and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by the electorate.

He warned the new council leaders against engaging in corrupt practices and directed them to reside in their respective local government areas rather than in the state capital.

“As chairmen of councils, you are the government at the grassroots. You are in a strategic position to project government policies that are pro-poor and aimed at improving the lives of our rural communities,” the governor said.

He urged them to drive development in their local government areas by making themselves accessible to the people and responding promptly to their needs.

“Governance is best appreciated when its impact is felt at the grassroots. You must be a symbol of government in your respective duty posts,” he added.

Fintiri also called on the chairmen to work closely with traditional rulers and Development Area Administrators to strengthen public trust and confidence in government.

Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated chairmen, the Chairman of Yola North Local Government Area, Alhaji Ibrahim Jibrin, thanked God, Governor Fintiri and the electorate for the opportunity to serve.

He pledged that the chairmen would discharge their responsibilities with diligence and ensure that the people enjoyed the dividends of democracy.
