Some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have expressed disappointment following the sentencing of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to 20 years imprisonment with hard labour over his involvement in the Samreboi illegal mining case.
The supporters argued that the sentence was excessive, insisting that the former Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman had not committed acts deserving such a lengthy prison term.
“Chairman Wontumi hasn’t killed anyone. 20 years is too much. Some people have deliberately decided to let him suffer, but they have forgotten that power is transient,” one supporter stated.
The comments have sparked debate on social media, with some users questioning whether the punishment fits the offence, while others maintain that illegal mining activities must attract strong sanctions to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
