A group of young men have been hailed as heroes after footage emerged showing them rescuing a mother and her baby from floodwaters that submerged their home following Monday’s heavy rainfall across the Greater Accra Region.
The dramatic footage shows several youths positioned on a rooftop, leaning over the edge and working in coordination to pull the woman and child to safety, while the two victims are seen partially submerged in fast-moving brown floodwater below, being guided toward the building through the current.
The rescue, carried out without any professional equipment, required the young men to work together carefully to extract the mother and baby from the dangerous floodwater and bring them to the relative safety of higher ground.
The location of the incident has not been confirmed, though the flooding conditions visible in the footage are consistent with the severe inundation recorded across multiple parts of Accra on Monday, which also affected Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Achimota Mile 7, the Spintex to Polo Grounds corridor, and several other communities.
The footage has been widely shared and praised on social media, with many users describing the young men as embodying the spirit of community solidarity in the face of a disaster that has tested Accra’s resilience across the past week.
