Kano Govt to begin 3,000-hectare irrigation scheme under SPIN project

The Kano State Government has concluded plans to commence the construction of a 3,000-hectare modern irrigation scheme across Minjibir, Gabasawa and Gezawa Local Government Areas under the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria, SPIN Project, in a move aimed at boosting agricultural production and strengthening food security.

The project, which forms the first phase of a broader irrigation development programme, is expected to serve as a major investment in the state’s agricultural sector by expanding irrigated farmland, improving water management and creating employment opportunities for thousands of residents.

According to the state government, the initiative marks the beginning of a larger programme that will deliver 7,000 hectares of modern irrigation infrastructure in its first two phases, comprising 3,000 hectares in Phase I and an additional 4,000 hectares in Phase II.

The government said the SPIN Project ultimately targets the development of 15,000 hectares of modern irrigation schemes across Kano State, with the objective of reinforcing the state’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading agricultural and food production centres.

Beyond the expansion of irrigation facilities, the administration also disclosed plans to rehabilitate the Jakara-Wasai Dam, also known as the Minjibir Dam, as well as the Thomas Dam in Danbatta Local Government Area.

The rehabilitation works, it said, are designed to restore critical water infrastructure, improve water resource management and ensure sustainable irrigation for farming communities across the state.

Speaking while inspecting the proposed project sites to assess the preparedness of the Kano State SPIN Project Implementation Unit (SPIU), the Project Coordinator, Engr. Nuraddeen Abubakar, described the initiative as a demonstration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to transforming agriculture into a key driver of economic growth and rural development.

He said the project extends beyond irrigation infrastructure, noting that it represents a long-term investment in the state’s agricultural future.

“This is more than an irrigation project; it is a strategic investment in the future of Kano State. Through the SPIN Project, we are creating opportunities for our farmers, empowering our youths and women, improving food production, and building resilient water infrastructure that will serve generations to come,” Abubakar said.

He added that with the commencement of Phase I and the planned implementation of subsequent phases, the administration remains on course to achieve its target of developing 15,000 hectares of modern irrigation under the SPIN Project.

The state government said the project is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, support all-season farming, increase farmers’ incomes, attract private sector investment and accelerate Kano’s transition to climate-smart agriculture.

It maintained that the investment forms part of Governor Yusuf’s broader strategy to promote agricultural productivity, strengthen food security and build a resilient economy anchored on sustainable rural development.
