Kano launches statewide health supply chain review

The Kano State Government has launched the Kano State Supply Chain Quarterly Review Meeting as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare service delivery and improve the availability of medicines and other essential health commodities across public health facilities.

The initiative was formally approved by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, during the second-quarter review meeting organised by the Kano State Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA) in Kano.

The commissioner said the new platform forms part of the state’s ongoing health sector reforms aimed at improving coordination, accountability and efficiency among all health supply chain programmes.

He commended the leadership of the DMCSA for institutionalising the quarterly review mechanism, describing it as an effective tool for monitoring performance, identifying operational challenges and promoting continuous improvement within the healthcare supply chain.

Dr Yusuf expressed satisfaction with the agency’s progress and reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to building a resilient and efficient health system capable of meeting the healthcare needs of residents.

According to him, the quarterly review meeting, which previously focused solely on DMCSA activities, has now been expanded to include all supply chain programmes and stakeholders in the state’s health sector.

He said the expansion would strengthen collaboration, encourage knowledge sharing and improve decision-making to achieve better health outcomes across Kano.

Earlier, the Director-General of DMCSA, Pharm. Gali Sule, sought the commissioner’s approval to broaden the scope of the review meeting, citing the successes recorded since the mechanism was introduced.

“Due to the remarkable achievements recorded since the institutionalisation of this review mechanism, I seek the approval of the Honourable Commissioner to transform and expand the DMCSA Quarterly Review Meeting into the Kano State Supply Chain Quarterly Review Meeting,” Sule said.

He explained that the quarterly exercise provides a platform for assessing programme performance, reviewing service delivery, identifying challenges and developing practical strategies for improvement.

The director-general also announced that the agency would organise a week-long programme beginning on July 13 to commemorate the third anniversary of the Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf administration.

According to him, the activities will include prayers for peace and national unity, a public awareness campaign highlighting the agency’s reforms and achievements, and a symposium on drug abuse featuring experts from the health sector, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and Islamic scholars.

The celebration will culminate on July 16 with the commissioning of a new pharma-grade warehouse built to improve the storage and distribution of medicines and medical consumables across the state.

Sule said the event would also feature the recognition of Governor Yusuf by the Association of Industrial Pharmacists of Nigeria (NAIP) for settling inherited pharmaceutical debts estimated at ₦1.2 billion owed to suppliers.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, is expected to attend the commissioning ceremony.

The anniversary activities will conclude with an appreciation dinner and thanksgiving programme celebrating achievements recorded in the state’s health sector under the current administration.
