Kebbi police arrest family friend and three other suspects for threatening to kidnap resident if he fails to pay N30m ransom

The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested four suspects for allegedly threatening to kidnap a resident of Jega town unless he paid N30m ransom

The spokesperson for the command, SP Bashir Usman, who disclosed this in a statement on 6th July, 2026 said the suspects were arrested following a complaint lodged by the victim, Aminu Garba. 

According to the PPRO, Garba reported receiving anonymous phone calls demanding N30 million or face abduction.

Usman said further investigation revealed that one of the suspects, a family friend of Garba, supplied the victim’s phone number and family details, which were used to facilitate the threats.

“The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested four suspects for criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation through anonymous communication, and alleged threat to kidnap a resident after demanding a ransom of N30 million,” the statement read.

“The suspects, Muhammad Shafiu (21), Mansur Ibrahim (21), Aliyu Umar (25), and Muhammad Suleiman (23), were arrested following a complaint by Alh. Aminu Garba of Jega, who reported receiving threatening phone calls demanding N30,000,000 or face kidnapping.

“Investigation revealed that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd suspects procured a new SIM card and repeatedly called the victim, with one of them disguising his voice to sound like a Fulani man in an attempt to instill fear and conceal his identity. 

“The investigation further established that the 4th suspect, a family friend of the victim, supplied the victim’s phone number and family details, which were used to facilitate the threats.

“Through swift intelligence-led investigation, operatives of the Command tracked and arrested the suspects at Gumbin Kure and Gamjeji villages in Maiyama Local Government Area, thwarting the plot before it could be carried out.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Umar M. Hadejia, psc, MNIM, has directed that the case be thoroughly investigated and the suspects prosecuted in accordance with the law. 

“He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, warning that anyone involved in kidnapping, extortion, or related crimes will face the full weight of the law.

“The Command urges residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious calls or activities to the nearest police station or through the Police Emergency Numbers: 09039911876 and 07081074395. All information received will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.”
