Lagos seals Ikoyi property over untreated sewage discharge

The Lagos State Government has sealed a residential property at No. 5, Manuwa Street, Ikoyi, for allegedly discharging untreated sewage into a public canal through a non-functional sewage treatment plant.
The enforcement was carried out on Wednesday by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office following complaints from residents and investigations that confirmed the environmental violation.
The State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development in a post on his official X handle.
According to Wahab, the property was sealed over the “deliberate and continuous discharge of untreated sewage into the canal via a non-functional and moribund sewage treatment plant.”
He added that the premises was also maintained in an unsanitary condition, resulting in foul odour, environmental nuisance and potential public health risks.
The commissioner said the enforcement followed public complaints and subsequent investigations that confirmed the reported infractions.
He urged residents and property owners to comply with approved wastewater management practices to protect public health and the environment.
Wahab warned that violators would face appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution in line with the state’s environmental laws.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and ensuring a clean, safe and healthy environment across Lagos.
