NPC Launches Online Birth And Death Registration Platform Nationwide

According to the National Population Commission, Nigerians can now register births and deaths and receive certificates online via its recently launched digital registration platform, which frequently eliminates the need for in-person visits.

At a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, NPC Chairman Dr. Aminu Yusuf declared the launch of the VitalReg platform and the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system.

Yusuf claims that on July 1, 2026, the portal became live nationally, encompassing all 36 states as well as the Federal Capital Territory.

“On behalf of the National Population Commission, I have the great honor and privilege of formally announcing the full start of the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system’s digital registration of births and deaths on the VitalReg platform.

“This transformative initiative is now operational across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, effective July 1st, 2026,” he stated.

By offering quicker and more effective services, round-the-clock online access, digital certificate issuing when appropriate, enhanced data validation, and a more secure national civil registration database, the NPC chairman claimed the digital platform will modernize birth and death registration.

For Nigerians seeking registration services, he continued, the approach will help cut down on paperwork, waiting times, and needless travel.

“This digital innovation is among the most revolutionary reforms in Nigerian civil registration history.”

It demonstrates the Commission’s steadfast dedication to using technology to enhance service delivery, bolster data integrity, and ensure that every birth and every death that takes place in Nigeria is safely and precisely recorded,” he stated.

According to Yusuf, there are an estimated five million births in Nigeria each year, yet millions of births and deaths go unrecorded.

Approximately 57% of births are currently registered nationwide, however less than 20% of deaths are registered.

These limitations restrict the availability of trustworthy data required for efficient national planning and rob many Nigerians of their legal identity, he said.

He stated that in order to increase coverage, the commission had set up 4,011 operational registration centers throughout the 774 local government areas of the nation and was attempting to grow the network to roughly 8,000 centers.

In order to decentralize birth registration and legal identification services at the local level, he said the commission had also partnered with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, the National identification Management Commission, UNICEF, and Barnksforte Technologies Limited.

Yusuf claims that the VitalReg platform is intended to enhance service delivery and assist the Federal Government’s digital transformation plan by integrating with Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem.

He stated that in order to maintain the digital infrastructure, certain specialized administrative services, such as record updates, certificate reissuance, attestations, and verification requests, would be subject to evaluated fees.

He emphasized that birth notice and registration services would continue to receive substantial subsidies, nonetheless.
