A property at No. 5, Manuwa St. Ikoyi has been shut by the Lagos State Government for reportedly releasing raw sewage into a canal via a malfunctioning sewage treatment facility.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office enforced the law on Wednesday in response to resident complaints and investigations that verified the environmental infraction.
In a post on his official social media handle, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, revealed the situation.
Wahab claims that the “deliberate and continuous discharge of untreated sewage into the canal via a non-functional and moribund sewage treatment plant” was the reason the property was blocked.
He continued by saying that the property was also kept in an unhygienic state, which led to an unpleasant smell, environmental problems, and possible health hazards for the general public.
According to the commissioner, the enforcement responded to public complaints and investigations that verified the alleged violations.
In order to safeguard the environment and public health, he asked locals and property owners to adhere to established wastewater management procedures.
Wahab issued a warning that anybody who violated the state’s environmental rules would be subject to the proper penalties and possibly punishment.
He reiterated the state government’s dedication to upholding environmental laws and guaranteeing a hygienic, secure, and safe environment throughout Lagos.
